Comparison of Adele's and Kendrick Lamar's album covers

We can see clearly from the album cover that Adele’s album ‘25’ is going to be solemn. We can see this through the colour use with the majority of the colour being black and white. However, Adele uses a sepia effect to introduce a melancholic tone for the rest of the album. Adele also uses a mode of address on her cover to entice in the potential listener. Adele’s facial expressions connote that she is upset and has been unnerved by someone or something.  Moreover, the use of a mode of address allows the listener to sympathise more with the music as we can see the pain through her face. This album cover will attract her audience as they will want to discover the source of Adele’s pain.

On the other hand, Kendrick’s album cover gives off a totally different vibe. On this album cover, we see Kendrick looking away from the camera and looking into the distance. This connotes that Kendrick is a deep thinker and something is troubling him and by showing this on the cover, it will entice his fans as they will now be expecting Kendrick to explain how he feels in his lyrics. The title of the album, ‘good kid maad city’, intrigues fans as we want to know more about the ‘maad city’ and why it is spelt like that. Kendrick is dressed in regular clothing too show he hasn’t lost touch with his humble beginnins like many of his competitors.

To conclude, Adele and Kendrick Lamar are both highly successful in the music industry. Their fans are completely different so they need to have different things to please their different fans.
